Radiation Oncology Glossary
- Brachytherapy - The process of treating a tumor using radioactive sources; can be Low Dose Rate (LDR) or High Dose Rate (HDR.) The LDR sources have a much lower activity than the sources used for HDR.
- HDR - Temporary catheters are inserted into, or next to, the tumor and a highly radioactive source is temporarily inserted into the catheter to irradiate the affected area. The amount of dose delivered depends on the amount of time the source is in the catheter.
- LDR - Commonly used to treat prostate cancer. Small radioactive seeds are permanently implanted directly into, or next to, the tumor.
- Linear Accelerator (LINAC) - A device that produces radiation used for treating cancer. The beam of radiation is produced outside the body so the treatments are referred to as external beam therapy.
- Medical Dosimetrist - Person responsible for creating radiation treatment plans based on the Radiation Oncologist's prescription.
- Medical Physicist - Person responsible for ensuring a patient receives the exact dose prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist throughout the course of treatment.
- Radiation Oncologist - Medical Doctor who has received specialized schooling about cancers and the biological effect of radiation.
- Radiation Therapist - Person responsible for delivering daily radiation therapy treatments to patients.
