The Oncology Market

The radiation oncology market is growing worldwide.  Internationally, the market is in its infancy.  However in the United States over 5 million Americans have cancer.  There are about 850,000 new cancer cases diagnosed annually with 60% of all cancer patients being treated by radiation therapy during the course of their illness.

Breast is the most common cancer (21%) followed by prostate (20%) and lung cancer (13%).

There are approximately 2,000 radiation centers nationally.  Radiation centers average 650 patients annually, and provide an average of 11,300 treatment visits.  A small radiation center generates approximately $5,000,000 annually.  Radiation center technology continues to shift and increase in complexity.  The shift from 2-D and 3-D technology to IMRT technology creates a conservative revenue stream of about 25% - 50% or (at the low level) $1.5M in annual revenues with improved patient outcome.  There are two key gating factors that allow radiation centers to provide these advanced services:  Quality medical physics specialists and capital equipment.  Failure to continually upgrade services risks adverse market position short and long term.  These shifts create revenue opportunities for both the radiation centers and Oncology Med.
